How Many Days Until New Year's Day?

There is no ambiguity about the date — the new year begins at midnight on January 1 — but a countdown to it works a little differently from other holidays. Because January 1 opens the year rather than sitting inside it, the counter here always targets the upcoming January 1: the first day of next year. The number you see is therefore also the number of days left in the current year.

The math is the usual whole-day count, midnight to midnight, based on your device's clock and time zone. That local-time detail matters more for New Year than for any other holiday, since the new year famously arrives in New Zealand many hours before it reaches New York.

January 1 as the start of the year goes back to the Romans: Julius Caesar's calendar reform of 46 BC fixed it as the day new consuls took office.
