The 4th of July is the rare holiday whose date is its name, so there is never any doubt about when it falls — only about which weekday it lands on. That weekday shapes the celebration: a Friday or Monday Fourth creates a natural three-day weekend, while a midweek one often stretches into two half-weeks of travel. When July 4 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, federal employees observe the holiday on the adjacent Friday or Monday, but fireworks still fly on the 4th itself.

The countdown counts whole calendar days from today to the upcoming July 4, midnight to midnight. On July 5 it rolls over and begins the roughly year-long count to the next one.

July 4, 1776 is the date the Continental Congress adopted the final text of the Declaration of Independence — not the date independence was voted (July 2, which John Adams predicted would be the great anniversary) and not the date most delegates signed (August 2). The adoption date is what got printed at the top of the famous broadside, and it stuck. In an odd historical coincidence, both Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years later.

Congress made the day a federal holiday in 1870 and a paid one in 1938.
