Words with the Most Vowels

Every dictionary word with an unusually high vowel-to-letter ratio, sorted by ratio. From the all-vowel curiosities at the top (EUOI, EUOUAE) down to the long-form vowel-heavy words at the bottom (AUTOECIOUS, EUDAEMONIA, PALAEOGAEA). Useful when your Scrabble rack is overloaded with vowels and you need a place to dump them.

How the ratios work

Each section groups words by how many of their letters are vowels vs consonants. All Vowels is the extreme — words made entirely of vowels with no consonants at all (AA, EAU, EUOI). 6:1 means six vowels to one consonant (EUOUAES). 5:1 means five vowels to one consonant. And so on down to 5:2 and 7:3 ratios, which contain more consonants but still skew dramatically vowel-heavy.

Why this matters in Scrabble

A rack with five or six vowels and only one or two consonants is a problem — most words need a mix. AECIA (5 letters, 4 vowels) clears four vowels in one play. EUOUAE (6 letters, 5 vowels) clears five. EPOPOEIA (8 letters, 6 vowels) clears six and lands a bingo if you have an open lane. Memorising even a handful of these turns a hopeless rack into a high-scoring play.

Frequently Asked Questions

The longest English word made entirely of vowels is EUOUAE (six vowels, zero consonants — a Latin solfège mnemonic). Its plural EUOUAES has six vowels and one consonant — a 6:1 ratio. For words with all five distinct vowels (A, E, I, O, U), EUNOIA at six letters is the shortest, and EUDAEMONIA and FACETIOUSLY both contain all five.

Yes. 14 words in the Scrabble dictionaries are made up entirely of vowels: AA, AE, AI, AIA, EA, EAU, EE, EUOI, EUOUAE, IO, OE, OI, OO, and OU. Most are short loanwords or interjections. EUOUAE is the longest at six letters, and its plural EUOUAES has a 6:1 vowel-to-consonant ratio.

For a rack with five or more vowels, the high-ratio words on this page are the answer. AECIA, AERIE, ADIEU, AUDIO, OUIJA, and QUEUE each clear three or four vowels in a single play. AUREOLE, AUREOLA, and EPOPOEIA push it further — six vowels in a single word — if you have the right rack and an open lane.

Words with All Vowels lists only words made up entirely of vowels with no consonants (14 words). This page is broader — it lists words with high vowel-to-letter ratios across all lengths and ratios, from 100% vowels down to 7:3. The All Vowels list is the most extreme subset of this page.
