What is Crossplay?

Crossplay is The New York Times’ tile-based word game that challenges you to build high-scoring words from a limited set of letters. Like classic word-building games, you’ll balance smart vocabulary choices with strategic placement and letter values to beat your NYT opponent. Every round rewards planning: conserve high-value tiles for the right moment, chain bonus squares when available, and make efficient use of your rack.

While Crossplay will feel familiar to fans of Scrabble-style games, it uses its own tile values and board layout, which means the best plays aren’t always the ones you expect. As of fall 2025, New York Times has made the game only available in Beta release in New Zealand. There is no telling if NYT will make the game widely available everywhere. If you’re switching over from Scrabble, be sure to recalibrate: certain letters are worth more (or less) than you might assume, and smart sequencing often matters as much as raw word length.

How to Use Our Crossplay Word Scrambler

Stuck on your next move? Our Crossplay Scrambler (inspired by our popular Scrabble Word Finder) helps you turn any jumble of letters into valid, high-scoring plays. It’s fast, flexible, and built for Crossplay’s tile values and gameplay. The Crossplay Word Finder tool above allows you to find every possible combination of words you can create from your input word. The generator can be used as a cheat for Crossplay, Scrabble, Words with Friends and even other games including Jumble, Literati, and Word Ghost. In order to use the Crossplay Cheats, type in the letters from your rack. Please use "?"s to work with blank tiles. In order to find the highest possible scoring word, you may want to use the starts, contain, and ends boxes in the advanced options sections.

Quick Start

  1. Enter your letters: Type the tiles from your rack into the input box. Use a question mark ? to represent a blank (wildcard) tile.
  2. (Optional) Add pattern clues: If you know part of the word (e.g., it must start with RE or match a pattern like R..E), include that to narrow results.
  3. Choose filters: Set minimum/maximum word length, “starts with,” “ends with,” or “contains” filters to target exactly what fits your board opportunity.
  4. More Options:Use the advanced options to sort by Point Values. This will tell you the most valuable plays you can make on your board. Each result links to The Word Finder dictionary so you can see the definition of the words you are about to play.
  5. Search: Click the button to generate playable words from your letters. Sort by score, word length, or alphabetical to scan results quickly.
  6. Play smarter: Shorter, higher-value words can beat longer ones—especially if they let you reuse premium letters on your next turn.

Tips for Better Results

  • Use blanks wisely: A single ? dramatically expands possibilities; try different positions if your first pass is too narrow.
  • Refine and rerun: If you see too many options, add a pattern (e.g., “must end in ED”) to match your board.
  • Think value, not just length: In Crossplay, tile values differ from Scrabble, so prioritize words that leverage your highest-value letters.

Friendly reminder: Tools like this are best used for practice, learning new words, and analyzing strategy. If you’re playing competitively or comparing scores with friends, agree on ground rules first.

The Word Finder

Check out our Crossplay, WWF, and Scrabble Word Lists, which are invaluable to improving your score in both games. If you start by getting to know the 2 letter words and the words with a Q but no U, you will have a huge advantage. This is because you can rack up huge points by creating multiple words in just one play, and sometimes a 2 letter word allows you to do just that. Additionally, knowing your two letter words allows you to get rid of tiles at the end of games. Another list people don't talk about as often is the list of hooks. A 3 letter hook allows you to create 2 words in your play, one that adds a letter to the beginning (or end) of a word, and your own word that you actually spell out. You can also access the Anagram Solver which will sort out your anagram finding issues. Currently it's a single word Anagram Solver but we also have a multi word generator as well. It is also important to remember to play defense in Scrabble/Crossplay. This means that you should not open up the triple letter word tile (or even double word) on your board for your opponent(s) because they can score big. The only exception is if you yourself are scoring big in the process, or if you think your opponent cannot utilize the triple word tile. Even better is if you have a rare combination of letters (and blanks) that would allow you to use the triple word tile in your next turn after opening it up, while still making it tough for your opponent to use.

Our Word Finder Tool searches our database of words from the ENABLE and SOWPODS dictionary that both Scrabble and Crossplay are based upon. It also includes words that were added by the creators of both games such as "texting." In some very rare occasions, there will be a word that is returned in the descrambled results which is not accepted by Scrabble, Crossplay, or Words With Friends. Typically this is because Scrabble has chosen to remove the word because of its negative influence. We will refrain from posting sample words here because they can sometimes be vulgar. If you are solely a Crossplay connoisseur, consider giving Scrabble a whirl on the app store. It has improved greatly!
