How Dartwords Works
Dartwords gives you ten darts and no clue before the first guess. The opening screen simply says to guess any word. Each reply comes from Darty, a small animated dart character that describes how the secret word relates to yours. In our testing, a first guess of ANIMAL drew the reply LARGER. A dart then lands on the board closer to the bullseye the nearer your guess sits in meaning.
Spelling plays no part in the score. That sets Dartwords apart from letter-based games such as the one covered on our Wordle hints page. A related daily game that also scores by meaning is Semantle, which has run since early 2022. One new word appears each day, free, in the browser, and the game launched on 17 August 2026.
The Blaseball Studio Behind Dartwords
Dartwords comes from The Game Band, the studio that earlier released the narrative puzzler Where Cards Fall, the browser-based baseball simulation horror game Blaseball (20 July 2020 to 2 June 2023), and more recently Dead Man's Party. Creative director Sam Rosenthal has said the idea grew out of the loose word games his family played on road trips, the alphabet game and home-made versions of 20 Questions.
Rosenthal told The Verge that Darty was "literally inspired by Clippy". The studio built a hybrid hint engine: a local language model trained on the English dictionary supplies the broader relational clues, then switches to hand-written clues as guesses near the answer. How to Use the Hints Without Spoiling the Answer
The seven cards open from gentlest to most direct so you can stop as soon as you have enough. Length and vowels shrink the field of possible words. Category, part of speech and definition shift the focus to meaning and sit naturally beside the relational replies Darty already gives. First letter and last letter form the final lifeline.
The answer tiles sit separately. Reading any or all of the hint cards never shows the word itself. Dartwords Strategy for Fewer Darts
Open with a broad, concrete noun such as an animal, a food or a household object. That first dart maps a large territory of meaning. Treat each of Darty's replies as ruling out an entire category rather than a single word. Watch the board as a compass: the closer the dart lands to the bullseye, the narrower the remaining field.
Once a dart sits near the centre, stop leaping to distant categories. Guess close relatives of the last word that worked. The ten-dart limit rewards steady narrowing over scattered probes.
