How to Play Poople
Poople is a word ladder, the puzzle Lewis Carroll called "Doublets". Every day the game hands you a four-letter starting word and one fixed destination: POOP. You change exactly one letter per move, you can't rearrange or add letters, and every word on the way has to be in the game's dictionary. The ladder ends the moment your word is POOP, and your score is the number of moves it took. Fewer is better, but finishing at all counts as a win.
There is one shared puzzle a day, so everyone starts from the same word, plus an Unlimited mode with random starting words if one isn't enough.
How the Poople Solver Works
The solver treats every four-letter word in our dictionary as a point on a map, with a path between two words whenever they differ by one letter. From POOP it walks outward, recording how many steps away each word is, until it reaches your starting word. That number is the shortest possible ladder, and no route through our dictionary can beat it.
Shortest ladders are rarely unique. A word like WORD can reach POOP by dozens of equally short routes, so the solver scores every tie by how ordinary its middle words are, using the same word-frequency data behind our other tools, and lays out the friendliest ladder on the board. Letters that are already where POOP needs them turn brown, as they do in the game, so you can see the word taking shape. The rest of each word stays blurred until you tap a letter, reveal a row, or reveal everything. The solver sticks to common words unless you turn that option off, since Poople's own list is on the small side.
Tips for Shorter Ladders
- Count the letters you already have. Each letter of the start word that is already in the right place for POOP is a step you don't need. LOOP needs one move, PEEP needs two.
- Aim for the double O early. Most short ladders go through words like BOOK, HOOP, COOL or POOL. Getting two O's in the middle usually leaves a single change.
- Vowel swaps are your friend. Changing the vowel (WORD → WARD → WARP) keeps the consonant frame intact and often opens a new branch.
- Check the ending words. POOP can be reached from POOL, POOR, POOF, POOH, POOS, LOOP, COOP, HOOP, GOOP, PLOP, PROP, PEEP, PUMP, POMP, POUP and more. Any of those is one move from done.

Poople's own word list is a little smaller than the Scrabble dictionary we use. The solver sticks to common words by default, which matches the game's list almost every time. Turning 'Common words only' off lets it use the full dictionary, which can find a shorter ladder but may include a word the game does not accept.
It depends entirely on the starting word. A word like LOOP or POOL is one step from POOP, while a word with no letters in common needs at least four. The solver always reports the true minimum for its dictionary, so if it says five, no shorter ladder exists.
Poople is a casual daily puzzle with no prizes, so that is up to you. Many players use a solver to check whether a shorter ladder existed after they have finished, or to get unstuck on a word with an awkward starting letter. Revealing one letter at a time keeps it a hint rather than a spoiler.
