How Chainle Works
Chainle gives everyone the same five rounds each day, released at midnight Eastern Time. Every round shows one, two or three clue words and asks for a single word that connects them. You get one guess per round, and each round is worth up to 1,000 points, so a perfect day scores 5,000.
- Two-word bridge, rounds one to three: one word that belongs with both clues. The game's own example is pizza and pasta, linked by tomato.
- Three-word bridge, round four: one word that fits all three clues, such as river for bank, flow and bridge.
- Closest connection, round five: the word nearest in meaning to a single clue, such as cello for violin.
How Chainle Scores a Guess
Chainle describes every word in its dictionary with 300 numbers that capture how the word is used. Your guess is compared with each clue on its own and measured against the round's strongest link, the best word the game found. Each clue then grows a chain of up to eight links toward your word: the closer the meaning, the longer the chain. Match the strongest link and the chains meet for the full 1,000.
The clues are combined in a way that rewards balance, so in a two-word bridge a word that misses one clue completely scores zero however close it is to the other. In the three-word bridge the weakest clue gets a head start, so a word that links two of the three still earns about 500. Chainle's FAQ gives pizza and pasta as an example: cheese scores 993, oven 873, delivery 356 and car 170, while sauce and noodle score the full 1,000 alongside tomato. The full rules are in Chainle's FAQ.
How to Use These Hints Without Spoiling the Answers
Each round has its own card, so you can get help on the round you are stuck on and leave the others alone. The length and first-letter hints narrow the field. The near-miss hint lists the best other words for that round with the points Chainle would give them, which shows the direction of the answer without naming it; forms of the answer are left out of that list.
The answer for each round sits behind letter tiles. Tap one tile to check a single letter, or show the whole word. Once a round's answer is showing, the card also lists any other words that score the full 1,000. A date picker opens every day back to the first Chainle on 20 August 2026. Chainle Strategy
Think about what the clues share in meaning rather than words they combine with. A word that pairs neatly with each clue in a phrase can still score poorly if its meaning sits far from one of them. When a clue has more than one meaning, Chainle counts any of them, so the strongest link often reaches each clue through a different sense: bank links river and money, bark links tree and dog.
In the three-word bridge, a word that fits two clues still earns about 500, so a safe guess that covers two of them beats a long shot. In the closest connection round, look for a near synonym or a close sibling of the clue rather than something it is merely associated with, and avoid other forms of the clue word, which the game rejects.
Semantle, the Original Meaning-Based Word Game
Chainle scores words by meaning, an idea Semantle has used every day since early 2022. Semantle, created by David Turner and now part of The Word Finder, hides one word and gives every guess a similarity score, with a proximity rank once you enter the nearest 1,000 words. Unlike Chainle there is no guess limit and no clue words: you find your way from the scores alone. Play today's Semantle at semantle.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
A free daily word game at chainle.io, launched on 20 August 2026. Each day has five rounds, the same for everyone: three two-word bridges, one three-word bridge and one closest connection, with one guess per round and up to 1,000 points each.
A new puzzle comes out every day at midnight Eastern Time (New York). This page updates shortly after.
Every word has a list of numbers describing its meaning, and your guess is compared with each clue separately against the round's strongest link. Each clue grows a chain of up to eight links toward your word, and the chains are combined so that a word missing one clue scores almost nothing.
No. Any word as close to the clues as the strongest link also scores the full 1,000, and every accepted word scores something. This page shows the other full-score words for each round after you reveal its answer.
A guess must be a single dictionary word. Chainle rejects a clue word or a word built on one, another spelling of a clue, names, plurals, filler words and offensive words. In the closest connection round it also rejects other forms of the clue.
The best-scoring words in Chainle's own word list other than the strongest link, scored the way the game scores them. Words that are forms of the answer are left out, so the list points you in the right direction without giving the word away.
In each round's answer box, behind letter tiles: tap a tile for one letter, or Show answer for the whole word. Try the hints first.
Yes. The date picker opens every day back to 20 August 2026, the first Chainle, each with the same hints and answer tiles. Chainle itself also keeps a playable archive.
No. Chainle is played at chainle.io; this is an independent hints page.
