About Strands: Sports Edition

Strands: Sports Edition is the sports-themed spin on NYT Strands, published by The Athletic, the sports newsroom of The New York Times. The first puzzle went live on October 21, 2026, and a new one arrives every day. Each grid is the familiar six-by-eight board of letters, with a set of theme words and one spangram hidden inside, but every theme comes from the world of sports.

Expect anything from positions and plays to famous players, teams, events and the jargon fans use every day: the very first board hid the moves that happen after the snap in American football, and later puzzles move between leagues and sports. Knowing the sport helps, but the puzzle still rewards the same pattern-spotting as the original game: a clue that points at the theme, letters that bend in any direction, and a spangram that names the theme as it stretches across the board.

Each puzzle is credited to its constructor and editor, and the Sports Edition keeps its own numbering, separate from the daily NYT Strands puzzle. If you like your word games with a sports twist, our Connections: Sports Edition hints cover The Athletic's other daily puzzle.

How to Use Our Strands: Sports Edition Solver

Start with the theme hint if the clue has you stumped. Next, show just the first letter of every answer, or click a word in the list to see where it sits on the board without reading it. When you're ready, reveal one theme word or the spangram at a time, or reveal the whole solution at once. The hint words list shows valid non-theme words you can play to earn in-game hints, and the date picker takes you back to every earlier Sports Edition puzzle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Strands: Sports Edition is a sports-themed version of NYT Strands, published by The Athletic, the sports newsroom of The New York Times. It launched on October 21, 2026, and a new puzzle comes out every day. Like the original, each puzzle hides a set of theme words and one spangram in a six-by-eight grid of letters, but every theme is about sports: leagues, positions, players, events and jargon.

Read the clue, then find the theme words by dragging or tapping adjacent letters; words can bend in any direction. Every letter on the board belongs to exactly one answer. The spangram describes the theme and stretches across the board from one side to the opposite side. Finding three valid non-theme words earns you a hint.

The rules and the board are the same. The difference is the subject matter: the Sports Edition is written by The Athletic’s puzzle team, and every theme draws on sports knowledge, so player names and sports terms show up as answers. It is a separate puzzle with its own numbering, so it never repeats the daily NYT Strands puzzle.

Nothing is revealed until you ask. Start with the theme hint, show just the first letters, or click a word in the list to see where it sits on the board without reading it. When you are ready, reveal one answer at a time or the whole solution. The hint words list shows valid non-theme words that count toward your in-game hints.
