What Is Colorful Strands?
Colorful Strands is part of the New York Times Bonus Puzzles, which drop every Wednesday. It plays exactly like the daily Strands: a grid of letters hiding a set of theme words plus a spangram that stretches from one side of the board to the other. The twist is visual: the theme words light up in colour as you find them.
Words can bend in any direction, including diagonally, and every letter on the board belongs to exactly one theme word or the spangram. Nothing is left over.
Tips for Solving Colorful Strands
Find the spangram first if you can. It touches two opposite edges, so it is the one word you can hunt by shape rather than meaning. Scan the edges for a plausible starting letter and follow it across. Once you have it, the theme is no longer a guess.
Work from the corners inward. Corner letters have the fewest neighbours, so there are far fewer paths they can belong to than a letter in the middle of the grid.
If you are stuck on the last two words, use show first letters. Knowing where a word starts, without knowing what it is, is usually enough to finish the board yourself.
