Etymology

Borrowed from {{bor, en, fr, syrah}}. The derivation from the {{etyl, fa, en}} city name of w:shiraz, shiraz (شیراز, sc=fa-Arab) is today believed to be a legend. The same goes for derivations from syria, syracuse or the Greek island of syros. The name might be connected to the proto-celtic root {{inh, cy, cel-pro, *serrā}}, "billhook", referring to the method of harvesting.
