Either: from the {{bor, en, it, sinfonietta}}; formed on the {{der, en, it, -}} roots sinfonia, , symphony + -etta (feminine diminutive suffix), either in {{cog, en, -}} or in {{bor, en, de, -}} (as Sinfonietta) and adopted thence; or, an alteration of the {{der, en, fr, symphoniette}} to resemble an {{cog, it, -}} construction of the form sinfonia + -etta. Compare the {{cog, fr, -}}–{{cog, it, -}} hybrid symphonietta.
