(English prosthesis) from προστίθημι, , I add, from πρός, , towards + τίθημι, , I place, from {{der, en, ine-pro, *próti}}, *préti + *dʰédʰeh₁-, , to be putting, to be placing. However, often confused for a descendant of the Ancient Greek word πρόθεσις, , a preposing, preposition (without the σ), which is instead the source of a different term – see #etymology 2, alternative etymology, below.
