Noun

CORONIS (plural coronides) A device, curved stroke, or flourish formed with a pen, coming at the end of a book or chapter; a colophon. (figuratively, obsolete, rare) A thing’s conclusion; its end. (Ancient Greek, _, grammar) A character similar to an apostrophe or the smooth breathing written atop or next to a non–word-initial vowel retained from the second word which formed a contraction resulting from crasis; see #usage notes, the usage note.

Usage notes

Generally, the Ancient Greek breathings are only written atop initial letters (the consonant rho, initial vowels, and the second vowels of word-initial diphthongs). The coronis is one of only two exceptions to this rule; the other is the case of the double-rho, which is written as .
