Symbols Baby!

Welcome to our Copy Paste Symbols tool! Whether you’re looking for currency symbols, emojis, punctuation marks, math symbols, or even Korean characters, our tool can help you copy and paste your desired symbols into any social media site or word document.

How to Use the Copy-Paste Symbols Tool

  1. Find your symbol on the screen. Our symbols are sorted into sub-groups including star symbols, copyright symbols, currency symbols, bracket symbols, musical notes, arrows, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters, and more. Once you find the appropriate sub-group, locate the desired symbol you are searching for.
  2. Click the desired symbol. Clicking on a symbol will place it into the text-entry bar at the top of the page.
  3. Once your symbols are in this box, hit the green ‘copy’ button to copy your symbol(s). Or, if you’d prefer, you can highlight the symbols in the box and copy them using your computer or phone keyboard.

What’s the difference between a symbol, a letter, and a word?

Our Copy Paste Symbols tool contains Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters, as well as Greek letters and stylized Latin letters. This may lead you to ask: what is the difference between a symbol and a letter, anyway?

Technically, letters are symbols – but not all symbols are letters. This leads to a classic example of an overlapping Venn diagram where letters are a subset of all symbols. Technically, a ‘symbol’ is a “mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or process.” For instance, we might use a symbol like ‘☀’ to represent the sun. Similarly, in your science textbook, you might notice symbols like arrows (⟶) placed into equations to represent a process taking place.

As you can imagine, this broad definition of symbol means ‘symbol’ can mean a lot of different types of figures or drawings. On the other hand, the definition of a ‘letter’ is a lot more restricted, with a letter being “a character representing one or more of the sounds used in speech.” In this sense, a letter is simply a phonetic symbol. It’s important to keep in mind that, by this definition, character-based languages, like Chinese and Japanese, do not contain letters.

Instead, those languages contain only words. A word is “a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing.” Complete Chinese characters count as ‘words,’ but so do meaningful strings of letters, such as ‘bat,’ such as those found in phonetic languages.

What were the first symbols?

As you can imagine, it’s hard to know exactly when the very first symbol was created. But evidence suggests humans were drawing and creating symbols at least as far back as 100,000 years ago. Recently, etchings were discovered in a South African cave dating back to 100,000 B.C.E. The etchings, which look similar to a modern hashtag, have ignited debate over whether they truly constitute ‘symbols’ or whether they were simply created for decorative purposes. Regardless, it’s clear that humans have been using tools to put their mark on the world for a very long time.
