Click any cell to reveal the rectangle that covers it.

  • Fill the entire grid with non-overlapping rectangles.
  • Each rectangle contains exactly one clue number.
  • The number tells you how many cells the rectangle covers (width × height).
  • No cells can be left empty and no rectangles can overlap.

How the Boxed Solver Works

Our Boxed solver gives you today's answer and hints for the daily Business Insider Boxed puzzle. Click any cell to reveal the entire rectangle that covers it, boundaries and all. If you'd rather target a specific clue, click its rectangle button to reveal that rectangle directly.

Reveal All shows the complete solution, and Clear All resets the board so you can try a different approach. The date arrows let you navigate to previous or future puzzles.

The rectangle-by-rectangle reveal is what makes this useful. Confirming one placement often clarifies the boundaries of neighbouring rectangles, because those cells are no longer available.

What Is Business Insider Boxed?

Boxed is a daily spatial logic puzzle on Business Insider. You fill a rectangular grid with non-overlapping rectangles so that each rectangle contains exactly one clue, covers the correct number of cells, and leaves no gaps.

The game is inspired by Shikaku, a classic Japanese logic puzzle where you divide a grid into rectangles. Each number tells you the area of the rectangle it belongs to. Business Insider's version keeps the core rules clean and simple.

A new Boxed puzzle drops every day at midnight Eastern Time. Business Insider also offers Pipeline, Knighthop, and Tally as part of their daily puzzle collection.

Tips for Solving Boxed

Start with prime-number clues. A clue of 2, 3, 5, or 7 can only form a single-row or single-column rectangle. Near edges and corners, these have very few valid placements and are usually solvable first.

Edges and corners constrain placement. Clues near the border of the grid have fewer directions to expand. Work from the outside in.

Large clues near the center are the hardest. A clue of 16 in an 8×12 grid could be many different rectangles. Leave these for last once the surrounding area is filled in.

Don't create islands. Never leave a pocket of cells so small or oddly-shaped that no remaining clue can fill it. If you see an isolated group forming, backtrack immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Boxed is a daily spatial puzzle from Business Insider where you fill a rectangular grid with non-overlapping rectangles. Each rectangle contains one clue showing how many cells it covers. Every square must be filled with no gaps or overlaps. A new Boxed puzzle releases daily at midnight Eastern Time.

Each clue number tells you the area (total cells) of one rectangle. Your goal is to place rectangles so they cover the entire grid — every cell must belong to exactly one rectangle, and every rectangle must contain exactly one clue. If the clue says 12, that rectangle covers exactly 12 cells.

Boxed has three rules: fill every cell of the grid, use only non-overlapping rectangles, and ensure each rectangle contains exactly one clue whose value equals the rectangle's area (width × height). No gaps and no overlaps are allowed.

Our Boxed solver reveals today's answer rectangle by rectangle. Click any cell to reveal the rectangle covering it, or click a rectangle button to reveal it directly. Use Reveal All for the complete solution, or Clear All to reset. Use the date picker to view past puzzles.

Business Insider's Boxed puzzle resets daily at midnight Eastern Time (ET). All players get the same puzzle. If you're in a different time zone, the new puzzle may appear during your morning rather than at midnight local time.

Start with the largest or smallest clue numbers near edges or corners — they have fewer valid rectangle orientations. Prime number clues (2, 3, 5, 7) can only form thin strips, making them easy to place first. Work inward from constrained clues, and watch for cells that can only belong to one possible rectangle.

Yes — Boxed is essentially Shikaku, a classic Japanese logic puzzle. In Shikaku you divide a grid into rectangles so each contains exactly one number equal to its area. Business Insider's Boxed adds a fresh visual design but uses the same ruleset.
