What Is Boston Globe Align?

Boston Globe Align is a daily word-swap puzzle on a 5×5 grid. Each of the 25 tiles holds a letter or letter pair. Some tiles are locked in place (shown in orange) — these are your starting clues. Your goal is to swap the remaining free tiles until every row spells a valid 5-letter word. The game scores you on time and number of swaps, so finding the most efficient path matters.

Tips for Solving Align

Start with the locked (orange) letters. Each one confirms a letter in a row, which immediately narrows down which words can fit there. A row with two or three locked letters often has only one valid word — find that word first.

Treat the free tiles as a shared pool. Uncommon letters like Q, X, or Z have very few valid positions — resolve those first. High-frequency letters like E, S, and T can fit many words, so leave them for last. If you're stuck, use Reveal Next to place just one tile and try to work out the rest yourself.
