The Word Finder2025 Crossword Roundup

By Praveen L | Last edited November 19th, 2025

Crosswords don't just test vocabulary- they record it. Each puzzle is a snapshot of how we talk, what we reference, and what mattered that year. To see what the world was talking about in 2025, we analyzed over 90,000 crossword clues from major publications including The New York Times, The Guardian, the LA Times, Universal, and Stan Newman.

The result is a snapshot of the year in clues and answers: the classics that refuse to quit, the new vocabulary entering the grid, and the trends quietly fading away. Whether you're a crossword fan looking to improve your game or just curious about crossword culture, here's what defined 2025.

Most Common Crossword Answers of 2025

Short answers tend to dominate. These are the "glue" words of crosswords: vowel-rich and endlessly reusable. They aren't flashy, but they hold the puzzle together and give cruciverbalists (crossword designers) space to place longer, more interesting entries.

Most common crossword answers of 2025

This year, ERA was the most popular crossword answer, appearing 97 times. ERA was followed by ATE and OREO, with 79 and 78 occurences respectively.

Popular Long (length > 9) Crossword Answers of 2025

Longer entries tend to carry more personality. They're often where constructors sneak in humor, cultural references, and the year's shared vocabulary. Here are standout longer (ten letters or more) answers from 2025 that caught our eye.

Our favourite long crossword answers of 2025

Are crossword creators in their VILLAINERA? Some of the longer answers in this year's crosswords included BARBIECORE, THIRSTTRAP, and AIGENERATED. Pop culture and internet trends continue to shape crossword answers in fun ways, and we're sure that next year you can expect more clues reflecting the technological anxieties or hit films of the moment.

Most Common Crossword Clues of 2025

The most common clues of the year reflect the need for those "glue" words- short prompts leading to short answers. These were the clues that popped up the most in 2025.

Most common crossword clues of 2025

This year, the most common crossword clue was "Each", the most common answer for which was PER. This clue was seen 54 times across the year in the publications we analyzed.

Still, variation remains a key part of the craft. Even familiar targets like ERA can be clued in dozens of fresh ways, keeping solvers on their toes. Clues for ERA this year included:

Clues for ERA varied from references to historical periods to Taylor Swift's record breaking world tour.

Repeat Offenders

Some of these publications release tens of thousands of crossword clues a year, across hundreds of daily puzzles. It's no wonder that sometimes we see crossword designers reusing prompts from years gone by, while they try to come up with fresh clues that reference current events and trends.

New vs Reused clues in 2025

Of the over 90,000 clues we analyzed from 2025, 48% of them had been seen in our databases in a previous year.

Unique vs Repeated Clues by Publication - 2025

For each crossword we broke down how many clues were unique (used only once by that publication in 2025), versus how many were repeated (used more than once by that publication, this year). If you care about variety in your daily crossword, take a look at these statistics:

Unique vs Repeated clues by publication

The crossword with the highest ratio of unique to repeated clues was the Guardian Cryptic, at 97.4%. The lowest was Universal, at 85.5%.

Across the board, the number of unique clues is much higher than the number of reused clues. Clearly, crossword designers are doing their best to ensure that fans don't get clue-deja-vu. The same can't be said for reused crossword answers, however.

Unique vs Repeated Answers by Publication - 2025

Again, we looked at how many crossword answers were unique (used only once in that year, for that publication), versus repeated (used more than once by the same publication in the same year).

Breaking down unique versus repeated answers for each publication makes clear the challenge of publishing large crosswords every day: The publications who had more/bigger crosswords, were also more likely to repeat clues. If you're sick of the same old answers showing up in your daily crossword, these stats might help you choose a publication that offers more variety:

Unique vs Repeated answers by publication

As shown above, the crossword with the highest ratio of unique to repeated answers was The Guardian Cryptic, at 84.3%, followed by The Guardian Quick, at 74.7%. The Guardian Cryptic was the only cryptic crossword we analyzed for this year's roundup, and cryptic crosswords often have a different approach to clueing and answer selection compared to American-style crosswords. That being said, the Guardian Quick also had a high uniqueness ratio, so hats off to the folks at the Guardian!

The lowest ratio was Universal, for which only 33% of clues were unique. We can't blame them though. As the statistics show, the editors at Universal have to churn out over three times as many clues as those working on the Guardian Quick.

Methodology

We analysed 90,792 crossword clues from the NYT Daily, NYT Mini, LAT Daily, Universal, Guardian-Quick, Guardian-Cryptic, and Stan Newman crosswords, dating from Jan 1st 2025 - Nov 10th 2025. We compared these to 1,646,811 crossword clues from various publications released before Jan 1st 2025.

We used an AI model (GPT-5) to assign one or multiple topic tags to each crossword clue, using the clue, answer, and puzzle date, for clues from 2025. This list of clue tags is as follows: 'pop-culture', 'film', 'television', 'literature', 'art', 'geography', 'politics', 'celebrity', 'science', 'technology', 'internet', 'food', 'drink', 'fashion', 'religion', 'mythology', 'plants', 'animals', 'neologism', 'history', 'history-ancient', 'music', 'music-pop', 'music-rock', 'music-classical', 'music-hip-hop', 'music-electronic', 'music-jazz', 'music-blues', 'music-country', 'sports', 'sports-soccer', 'sports-american-football', 'sports-tennis', 'sports-basketball', 'sports-baseball', 'sports-cricket', 'sports-olympic', 'sports-track-and-field', 'sports-martial-arts', 'sports-ice-hockey', 'language-spanish', 'language-french', 'language-german', 'language-italian', 'language-japanese', 'language-chinese', 'language-portuguese'.
