Welcome to our Word List Containing Letters at Specific Positions! This list can help you find all the words which contain letters at a specific position within the word. Whether you are looking for help on a tricky crossword puzzle or looking for options for your Scrabble game, our tool can help you find the word you’re looking for.

How to Use “Word Lists With Letters at Specific Positions”

  1. Enter your letters into the appropriate boxes. There are separate boxes for different letter positions within the word. For instance, entering a letter into the first box will make it the first letter in the word; entering a letter into the second box will make it the second letter in the word; and so on and so forth. For parts of the word where you don’t have specific letters in mind, leave the boxes blank.
  2. Hit the green ‘search button.’ You’ll be brought to a separate page showing your results.
  3. Be sure to set your parameters for how you’d like the results to be sorted. You can order your results alphabetically, by length, or by Scrabble or Words with Friends points. You can also decide if you’d like your results to be sorted in ascending order (i.e. A to Z) or descending order (i.e. Z to A).
  4. Decide if you’d like to filter by word length. Our tool allows you to filter by word length. You can choose to view all words, or view words of a specific length between 2 and 15 letters long.
  5. Pay attention to the colors of the words to check they’re included in the right dictionary. Our tool displays words from a variety of gaming dictionaries. If you’re looking for words to play in a specific game, make sure you select a word that is actually legal in your chosen dictionary! All words in green exist in both the SOWPODS and TWL Scrabble dictionaries. Words in red are found in SOWPODS only; words in purple in TWL only; and words in blue are only found in the WWF dictionary.
  6. To learn more about a word, click on it. You will be brought to a separate page that contains information about the word’s definition, what dictionaries it’s included in, and how many points the word is worth in various word games.

Tips for Solving Crosswords

  1. Focus on the theme!

It may seem obvious, but it’s very important to remember to focus on the theme when you are solving a crossword. When you get so caught up in the details of the clue, it can be easy to forget that you have a second, big clue in front of you, usually embedded in the title or crossword caption. Whenever you get stuck on a word, circle back to the theme. Sometimes, that can help you narrow down your options.

  1. Start with shorter words.

Longer words are almost always harder to solve in crosswords because they are rarer and tend not to pop to your mind as quickly. Focusing on shorter, 3- to 5-letter words will usually help you get a jump-start on your board, filling in letters that can help you narrow down options for longer entries.

  1. Prioritize proper nouns.

Proper nouns are also a good place to start with a crossword, because they can sometimes be easier to guess. If you’re searching for the name of an actor who starred in a specific movie, for instance, you only have a few options for words you could enter, as opposed to more vague verbs or adjectives where it seems there are thousands of options. Especially if you’re a movie- or media-buff, these clues are great to circle back to when you’re stumped.

  1. Look for plurals

In a real pinch, search for clues that suggest the answer will be a plural. Even if you don’t know what the word as a whole is, you can usually guess that a plural word will end with an S. If you can enter this single letter, it can give you something more on the board to work off of for other clues.

  1. If you need help but aren’t quite ready to go for a full cheat, plan to use specific resources to help yourself.

Yes, you can just enter the enter clue into a Google search bar. But if you’re not quite ready to resort to those measures, keep in mind that you can use resources like dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias to help you out. At the end of the day, most crossword puzzle solvers need help of some sort to finish their games. There's no shame in looking for extra clues!
