Group Size

Group size is an  ADJECTIVE factor to consider when arranging space. It is an indicator of program quality. The viable space, ages of the children, and the numbers of caregivers all help determine the group size. Many children crowded into a small area will cause problems. Children are likely to feel stressed and engage in negative behavior when crowded. Likewise, a small number of children with too much space will also cause stress. Too much open space encourages children to run. You must strive to create an arrangement that will be the proper size for the group. The more children there are in the group. The more space is needed. A good rule of thumb is to plan open space for one-third to one-half of the classroom. Additionally, the room arrangement needs to be simple. Children will feel safe and secure in this arrangement. Arranging Shelving units and other furniture with group size in mind. A good arrangement allows teachers and children to move easily through the room. It also allows for teachers to see children and children to see them easily. This will promote a relaxed setting.
